Career Highlights
Peter E. Hart’s career has spanned AI and robotics research, entrepreneurship, and leadership of international research centers.
Among his research contributions are the co-development of the world’s first face recognition system, the first theoretical analysis of the world’s most widely used pattern classifier, the co-invention of the algorithm used to compute driving directions, the invention of the algorithm used in automobiles to find lane markings on pavements, and leadership of the project that created the world’s first robot with artificial intelligence.
He co-founded and/or led four companies, and founded and/or led research centers for US, French, and Japanese corporations.
He’s a Member of the National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of three professional societies, and a member of two halls of fame. He holds over 125 patents, and is among the world’s most-cited authors in the fields of Computer Science, Robotics, Information Theory, and Pattern Classification.
He holds Ph.D., M.S. and B.E.E. degrees from Stanford University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
